“So you had a parent who was a drunk”
I thought it was just a psychologist trying to keep the focus on the patient – as they should do. He was trying to analyse her – and she wanted to bring it back to him. I think she thought the question could have been Billy trying to tell her something about himself – which is why she asked him the same question. Sometimes patients want to bring up a situation but do so in a round about way – such as this. (although I’m not sure what the truth was in either case – was Billy accurate in his assessment of her and/or was he lying about his parents).
Puh-lease…. That was easy pickings for Leo’s character. What person from Boston DIDN’T have a drunk for a parent? He just said it, to give the impression he was reading her.

I think he was extremely smart as they said he should be in NASA and he knew the trigger or whatever you want to call it, that lying/even keel was having someone who was a drunk as a parent.

I do like tyrex’s theory. People of Irish decent tend to be drinkers so it was a good chance he was going to be right. Redhair, pale skin in Boston with an accent.
It’s set up earlier with the bit about the Irish being immune to psychoanalysis. It’s a bit of humor mixed with Madolyn being unable to deal with someone more real than, as Billy points out, a bunch of cops faking how hurt they are to use their weapons.
The Departed (2006) : So we’re just ignoring the SSN
could be wrong – but it appears that Costigan does do it – he just doesn’t stay. He fills it out at the bar next to Fitzy – then gives it to Delahunt – the only order he disobeys is that he doesn’t stay.
Not only did he provide the information, but he should have had no fear in doing so.
Remember? The reason they chose him to go under cover in the first place was because he already had a history of violence, family in the mob, and they put him through a short run through jail…
Anything they found on his SSN would have been what he wanted them to see.
He didn’t want to stick around because he was already a nervous wreck about them finding out he was a cop. He avoided confrontation as much as he could.
It was a question mark for Frank Costello for sure.
But as Costello said later in the restaurant that he couldn’t just kill everyone this time. He needed to be sure, and at the end of the movie, Costello trusted Costigan more than anyone and was bringing him up like another “son” of his.
Fitzy seemed to be the most suspicious.
I think he was going to get caught soon. Something had to break.
The Departed (2006) : Are we sure that the baby is Sullivan’s?
I think the implication is that the baby is NOT Sullivan’s. As said before, we can’t be sure, but the events in the film portray Sullivan as having episodes of impotence. Then, when she told him she was pregnant, he was not only surprised, he was a bit confused.
Couldn’t agree more. I guess it’s not outright said, so it could be SulIivan, but personally I don’t think so. I just rewatched this movie and I always felt it was heavily implied that the child was Costigan’s. I always interpreted it that Madolyn knew herself too.
Not only was Sullivan portrayed as impotent and really surprised to find out she’s pregnant, but shortly after when she discovers that tape while he’s in the shower, she basically tells him as much. She locks herself in the bathroom and shouts ‘And I thought I was the liar’ (It could simply imply that she had to cover up her affair, but it was said directly after the scene in which she tells him about her pregnancy) We see her later struggling to find a good way to say something ‘important’ when Costigan gives her that envelope. Costigan tells her to save whatever she has to say for later and tell him in two weeks , but of course he dies shortly after. At the funeral, she completely ignores Sullivan when he asks her ‘What about the baby?’. Of course, she could simply want to raise the child on her own cause she hates his guts, but I see it as her kinda going: yeah, the child wasn’t even yours so *beep* off.
The Departed (2006) : sullivan noticed madolyn crying for bil…
Yes, he was able to figure it out. When they left the funeral, he said, “what about the baby” and she kept walking.
That scene after the funeral was an obvious homage to final scene of The Third Man (1949) when (also after a funeral) Alida Valli just walks right on by Joseph Cotten.
