The Sioux are the “good” Indians, the Pawnee, enemies of the Sioux, are the “evil” Indians, and the American soldiers (except for Lt. Dunbar) are all complete buffoons who make the Keystone Kops look like models of professionalism. The reality, of course, is that cruelty, violence, and imperialism were practiced not only by the white man but by Indian nations against one another. The white man won because the Indians hated each other too much to unite (and still do). But Hollywood movies rarely make genuine attempts at telling history accurately anyway.
