Karen Black – MovieLog https://frowningbear.com/movies What me peepers have reckoned upon Thu, 07 Sep 2017 03:48:46 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.7.1 Trilogy of Terror (1975) (TV) https://frowningbear.com/movies/?p=180 Wed, 06 Sep 2017 14:00:28 +0000 http://frowningbear.com/movies/?p=180

Three bizarre horror stories all of which star Karen Black in four different roles playing tormented women.

An electrifying experience – you won’t believe your eyes!

EVERYONE I know that’s ever seen it says the same thing. That doll freaked them out! The doll in the last story is worth it all! You watch this and you won’t be able to go to sleep till you make sure any dolls in your house are locked away! I think the dolls face is so well done, so damned creepy that even with the somewhat limited “special effects” that were used to do the doll, it just freaks you out and afterward any little sound in your house will make you jump or send a shiver down your spine! For a made-for-TV movie from 1975 it is fantastic! I forget how much they paid to get the doll to work, but I think it was something like $100,000. Lots of money back then just for a single item for a movie, but well worth it! The stories are pretty good too! Worthy of the Twilight Zone, or Outer Limits! Karen Black is great in this. Of course, this was her time to shine in the mid ’70’s.

Karen Black contributed much to the 3rd segment “Amelia”. She re-wrote her first conversation with her mother on the telephone. Black wanted to emphasize that the mother was controlling and manipulative. The original words made the mother out to be too nice. Making the mother controlling of Amelia would make the audience more on her side when we realize what is going to happen to the mother when she comes to visit. Also when the doll is trying to escape from the suitcase the effects men could not figure how to show that Amelia is cut. Black thought to have them place the blood on her finger which she would hide from the camera until it was time to reveal the bloody finger.
